What's in my Suitcase

I know I've been slacking on the blog lately with my trip home, Kim visiting and a few other things going on, so this is a little overdue, but still may be a little interesting. Hopefully interesting.

I know I've mentioned how things are just so much more expensive here than in the U.S. and some stuff is rather hard to find or just unavailable. So I took full advantage of my fabulous trip home to bring back a suitcase full of goodies. I didn't bring much home, so everything I needed could fit in my carry-on. Which meant a full 50 lbs of packing!

And I filled every pound. Actually, I even went over by half a pound. Thanks to the lovely American Airlines attendant who didn't charge me $100 for the oversized bag or make me take something out!

So, here's what I valued in bringing down...

Candles!
I haven't been able to find scented candles here. Just the 'cheapy' air fresheners that don't really work. And they're still $5. Plus, the candles will come in handy when the power goes out.

Baking Soda Fridge Hanging Thing
Our fridge STUNK when we moved in. It's getting MUCH better now.

Lion Loofa!
Matt wanted a loofa. So of course, I got him a lion one. It is adorable.

Ziplock Bags
When we first came down here, I bought a box of ziplock bags - 15 bags for $8.  At home, I got 44 bags for $4. MUCH more affordable.

Hot Pads, Dish Towels, Kitchen Utensils
Yes - I got hot pads! And I now have more than one dish towel and dish rag. And thanks to Grandma, I have a strainer, whisk and some more serving spoons.

Fan
A 12" desk fan here is $40. I got this one on clearance for $11. Here's to keeping cool!

I got a variety of other things too, like more bath towels, large linen grocery bags, battery alarm clock, etc. We also stocked up on toiletries because they can be super expensive here.

I got a couple of fabric softner balls, too. The story behind those is that Matt worked so hard to find us laundry detergent. He came home from the store so proud of himself for finding the cheapest detergent for the number of loads. Turns out it was fabric softner.

I also had to purchase a couple more sundresses and shoes. And yes, had to is right.

So now that you've looked through all of the boring pictures, here's a couple of beautiful pictures from the Freeport this week. I hope Kim enjoyed her experience here! We had a little rain, but as you can see, there were some beautiful beach days so I could give Kim the best Bahamian experience! And she got to meet Tyrone. It doesn't get much better than that.

That's the interesting part of the blog for you!

  1. Hello,

Thank you so much for your blog! It is very informative as well as being able to enjoy the beautiful pictures! I have a question. My daughter is coming down to visit her boyfriend who is in med school at Ross. What can you advise as the most important things for her to bring>

I just sent him a care package--notebooks(says they are so expensive) and pens and a filtered water bottle,

What would be of most use to Emily while she is there that may help her boyfriend?

Thanks for your time and your blog! Sincerely, Susie

    1. Hi Susie!

I'm glad you're enjoying the blog! That's very exciting your daughter gets to come visit. Dominica is such a lovely place!

I would suggest that she bring a good pair of hiking shoes/sandals, a sturdy umbrella, waterproof backpack if she intends to go hiking, filtered water bottle, snorkle gear and items for the beach - sunscreen, bugspray, etc. If she is interested is doing things while he is studying, she should join the Ross Spouse Organization facebook group and Ross Excursion group. They have groups that go snorkeling once a week, hiking, site sighting and different excursions.

As for her boyfriend, a good care package is always a highlight! School supplies are always more expensive here so things such as paper, #2 pencils, pencil lead, dry erase markers, highlighters, binders and more are always helpful. Beyond that, simple reminders of home are so comforting for my husband and I. So photos, videos of friends and family, local food you can't find here (buffalo sauce!) things like that. Just little things to make him more comfortable! even things such as my favorite shampoo or body wash are a nice treat.

If you have any more questions, you can email, too! It's michelle.jean17@gmail.com. I'm happy to help! :)
